Monki & Competitors

The brand I have decided analyse and shoot for is Monki. Monki are a youthful, Womenswear brand which “puts the smile back in fashion”. They are an environmentally friendly brand who provide decent working standards. Their target audience is girls/women aged between 17-25. Their prices range from £8-£130. the clothing sold on Monki, is streetwear, which blends well with its target audience. Monki competitors are:

Analysis of Monki Fashion Site & Changes I Would Make

After looking at many fashion websites, I found the lay outs and colour combos to be very similar, where the background is white with black font, and the menu bar is across the top. The account/shopping bag is always situated in the top right hand corner. I believe this is done generically on websites so the customer is familiar and trusting of the site. It also makes it easier to use, unlike the likes of brands such as Zara.

After looking at the Monki site closely, I found it continues with the generic black and white, along with the menu across the top and shopping bag in the right hand corner. They have rollover menu buttons. Monki have a slideshow of recent trends and features which fills the majority of the home/landing page. There is only one basic gif, near the bottom of the landing page which is promoting the online sale still present on the site. The gif is just different garments being played on a loop, with red garments and red background. At the very bottom of the home/landing page, are links to Facebook, Instagram and pintrest where you can find latest trends and local events.

In terms of layout of the site, I don’t think much needs changing. I enjoy how free-flowing and easy the site is to use and doesn’t need much work. On the landing page, it opens with a slide show of trends and promotions, I would change the content of the slide show, not get rid of it. I would use my gif as a the main feature stretching across all 1000 pixels. It will then slide on to a image from my styled shoot. This image will then link to the final 5 images.

Mock up of Landing Page

When recreating the landing page for Monki, the layout will be similar to the original. This is because I don't think there is much work needed. The site is accessible and recognisable to customers and is simple and easy to use. My landing page will have a link to the We Heart page, which is where my 5 styled image editorial will be. The Monki title will also be active so the customer can easily find their way back to the landing page. There will be a slide show, using my GIF, sliding on to my 5 styled images, which will also be active.

GIF Proposal & 2D Mock Up

I propose for my gif to link to my final 5 images. As I am styling my model with handmade acccesories, one of which being flowers depicted as lenses on glasses. The glasses will be on the mannequin head with a faded flower wall back ground. The lenses of the glasses will spin around on the mannequin face displaying funky painted eyes.

Shoot Proposal

From the Monki brand research, I know that they are daring, fun and youthful, in terms of their models poses and colours. I found inspiration in my work place, in which there is a whole wall of fake flowers scaling from black, to white, and everything in between. Which lead me to my season choice of Spring/Summer 2016. I am going to photograph the wall in different sections where I will then style the models outfit, matching the colour of the flowers behind them. I will use fun model poses to portray the youth of the brand. I wish to use this concept to link my shoot and GIF together as one. I am going to photograph the model separately to the location, and photoshop the two shoots together, giving the effect the model has been wall papered on.

Trend

After looking at trend reports for Spring/Summer 2016, I decided the trend I’m going to use throughout my 5 styled images is Suede. I think the contrasting textures between the flowered back ground and the suede garments will have a fun balance, keeping with the Monki slogan “puts the smile back in fashion”.

Styling

Styling-

Keeping the quirky, minimal style of monki, my model will wear minimal, suede garments in colours matching the flowered wall. I will style this outfits with hand made accessories, such as flower lensed sunglasses, giant flower earrings and holding flowers between the teeth covering parts of the face for that flirtacious and fun vibe.

Model

After analyzing the site, I found that their models are very young, aged between 17-21, they have very younique features, such as freckles and gap teeth. There seem to be 3 types of models on their site. Pale blonde, pale brunette and asian models. The model I want to use will be blonde, with medium-long hair and pale skin. She will be aged between 17-21. She will be of a slim build.

Poses

The model will give a cool and flirtatious vibe, creating interesting shapes and lines with the body while playing with accessories.

Location

As described in my proposal, I am going to shoot the location separately to the model and combine the two in editing. These are some test photos I took earlier this week.

Lighting

Lighting-

The lighting I plan on using will be a set up of 3 lights, one directly in front of the model, one to the left and one to the right. There will be no shadows in this shoot.
